I don’t know if it’s all this talk of Halloween but I got to thinking about the terror that can be found in a truly evil smile. You know what I mean, the mouth is turned up at the edges but the eyes belong to someone who wants to do unspeakable things to you (and not in a good way!). Therefore, in the spirit of sharing and maybe scaring the crap out of you I thought I’d put together some of my favourites (and by favourites I mean those that, after the first viewing, gave me nightmares for weeks…….
This guy really gave me the willies and yet, when I was looking at stills this morning, I couldn’t for the life of me figure out why and then I found this clip……shudders!
I was a huge fan of Buffy (or, more accurately Angel and Spike) but never found it particularly creepy….until I watched the episode with The Gentlemen. These guys floated along bestowing murderous smiles on all those they encountered. If memory serves Buffy bought them to justice by making their heads explode although I can’t quite remember why…can you?
Fear of a two foot high plastic doll defies all logic but fear of one that’s alive and has a smile like this makes perfect sense!
Here’s Johnny! I watched The Shining again fairly recently and was thoroughly bored for the first 45 minutes or so but then the pace picked up, Jack Nicholson got his crazy on and I remembered why it’s such a bloody terrifying film! Handsome though he was, that’s not a smile you’d want to see!
So, there you have it, my top picks for ‘completely manic, deranged and likely to cause an unfortunate trouser incident’ smiles. What have I missed?
Let me know, I’d love to hear from you :O)

From my limited experience of horror genre, I think you have covered it all. π±

Yep me too, more than horror movies actually. One of the best for me was Primal Fear – check it out if you haven’t seen it, it’s a great film :O) x

Oh wow, ouch, I’d forgotten about all of those horrible smiles !!! I’m locking all the doors and windows tonight, and hoping my dreamtime doesn’t turn into nightmares, I still haven’t recovered from the Exorcist 45 years ago !!!

In my experience you donβt need to look at movies to see those cruel smiles – in fact, in my experience, the cruellest smiles have always come from vicars, priests etc. Trye! Honest!

I used to work for The Gentlemen. They appeared creepier than they actually were. It just took some getting used to. π±π½

Wonderful selection! Huge Buffy/Angel fan here too!
I have never persevered past the first 30 minutes of the Shining I’m afraid…
