Song Lyric Sunday: Street

How was your week? Hope you had a good one whatever you’ve been up to :O) If you want a great way to start your day and you love music (who doesn’t!) why not join us playing Song Lyric Sunday? The brainchild of the lovely Helen who resides over at This thing called life one word at a time, we receive a one word prompt each week and, from that, we have to track down a suitable song and post a video link and lyrics. It’s great fun so why not give it a shot :O)

Here are all the rules:

  • Post the lyrics to the song of your choice, whether it fits the theme or not
  • Please try to include the songwriter(s) – it’s a good idea to give credit where credit is due and it’s honestly just a simple Google search
  • Make sure you also credit the singer/band and provide a link to where you found the lyrics
  • Link to the YouTube video, or pull it into your post so others can listen to the song
  • Ping back to this post or my own Song Lyric Sunday post
  • Read at least one other person’s blog so we can all share new and fantastic music and create amazing new blogging friends in the process

I’ve got to be honest, I’m not a huge Springsteen fan but as soon as I heard this song I absolutely loved it; the emotion in it is immediately evident and so raw. When you couple this with the heart-wrenching but sublime film Philadelphia, for which this was the theme tune, you cannot help but be moved. For anyone who doesn’t know the film, here’s a second video which will give you an indication of the superb acting by Tom Hanks in what must have been a most challenging part:

“Streets Of Philadelphia”

I was bruised and battered, I couldn’t tell what I felt
I was unrecognizable to myself
I saw my reflection in a window, I didn’t know my own face
Oh brother are you gonna leave me wastin’ away
On the Streets of Philadelphia

I walked the avenue, ’til my legs felt like stone
I heard the voices of friends vanished and gone
At night I could hear the blood in my veins
Just as black and whispering as the rain
On the Streets of Philadelphia

Ain’t no angel gonna greet me
It’s just you and I my friend
And my clothes don’t fit me no more
I walked a thousand miles
Just to slip this skin

The night has fallen, I’m lyin’ awake
I can feel myself fading away
So receive me brother with your faithless kiss
Or will we leave each other alone like this
On the Streets of Philadelphia

Written and performed by Bruce Springsteen

I hope that you love this song as much as I do and I wish you all a very happy Sunday

Lisa x

Springsteen and Hanks—a wonderful team! I didn’t see this film when it came out, but will visit our archival video store to see if I can find it—or possibly find it on YouTube. I’ve always loved Bruce Springsteen (and Tom Hanks)!

I’m not really a Springsteen fan, but it’s a good song and he does a nice job on it. Great choice.

Such a sad and powerful movie. Tom Hanks is one of my favorite actors, too.
I don’t really remember the song, though, but thanks for sharing it and the movie clip.
